On March 19th, 2003 the U.S. launched an illegal war on the sovereign nation of Iraq. The war was absurdly given the name "Operation Iraqi Freedom," and has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis (90% or more non-combatants), millions of Iraqi refugees, and uncountable injuries, damage and suffering. On the U.S. side, it has cost 4757 U.S. military lives, $777,000,000, plus untold billions more for medical care of our wounded, and uncountable injuries and suffering.
March 19th, 2011 marks the 8th anniversary of the "shock and awe" of the U.S. attack on Iraq. Several of us have put together an event to bring attention to this horrific, illegal, and immoral war that has claimed hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. On Saturday, March 19th, we will be gathering in Corvallis at Central Park between 7th and 8th Streets at noon for a short memorial ceremony which will include remarks by Dr. Joseph Orosco, the Director of the OSU Peace Studies Program, the reading of some Iraqi poetry and a song by the Raging Grannies. Following the ceremony, we will form a solemn procession and walk quietly carrying mock coffins, signs, and names of the dead, to the National Guard Armory on Kings Blvd. We are asking participants to wear black or dark clothing.
